After reading an article in class, it brought some interesting viewpoints to my mind on video games as a whole. Growing up I have seen my brothers play video games on "X-Box Live" for a very long time. They play games like Call of Duty, even games like Madden, that allow you to play with someone "live" and you can interact with players across the world. The amount of cursing, name-calling, and threats you read and hear as they play is unruly. After seeing the company called "Riot" try and find the source of the toxic behavior, it made me sit back and realize that action is being taken to source and extinguish the problem. This company not only is trying to find the roots of toxic behavior, but they are also publicly sharing how they are doing it. As I read in the
article the goal of the team is to change the way players act. Banning the players is only a temporary fix to a long-term problem. What is remarkable about what they are doing is they are sharing their findings with other developers in order to make the cyber world a better place. I found their concepts to help and the focus on the issue itself very interesting. Looking over the gaming world interactions is very easy, yet the online world is a huge form of bullying nowadays. So this article was very interesting to read and change my perspective on gaming.
Hey Bria, the irony in your post is that I currently have an Xbox1. Growing up I use to always play my brother in NBA 2k. Since I attended the University of Arizona and my brother is three years older than me and lives in Los Angeles, California. We don't always get to see each other. So we play online NBA 2k to keep our competitive spirits up. Video games with the online option are beneficial because they give everyone a chance to compete against each other.
ReplyDeleteI almost choose that exact picture! I also grew up with a little brother who is always playing X-box and have seen a lot of violence and negative talk and communication through the X-box while playing games like Call of Duty, Grand theft auto, and many other violent war/ gangster games. This is really interesting that you have noticed this as well too! Great job on your post.
ReplyDeleteHey Bria, Interesting blog post about online gaming. Growing up I had an Xbox console and I was able to use Xbox live and go online. When one goes online, they will encounter these types of deviant behaviors. It’s hard to clean up the online gaming since a lot of people may take it serious than it actually is. Hopefully the online gaming community will be a better place to experience gaming and make new friends.
