Civil Inattention

After class being online this week, in the textbook, we learned about civil inattention which is social norm that when you are in a public setting and there are plenty of people around you, you may be able to hear the conversation people are having near you, but you know not to bud in and intervene. For instance, at starbucks you can be sitting at a table with a friend having a conversation and the person at the table next to you is having a serious conversation with the person they are sitting with at that table. Although we may be able to hear their conversation, the civil inattention norm leads us to not intervene.
Yet, on social media I feel that conversations happen and just about anyone can comment. The norm of civil inattention does not necessary apply to the online world people everyone has the option to comment on one another's posts. Even if you choose not to bud into and comment on "twitter beef" you can still like posts which shows you are intervening in some way. So the norm of civil inattention definitely applies more in person than it does online.
Here is where I obtained this picture

  1. Interesting blog post dealing with civil inattention. I would like to think one could have common sense to not but in to someone conversation. However if this applies to social media anyone can comment on something which I agree with you there. The unique thing about social media is it is a platform that it erases the face to face interaction that someone may have with someone else. It’s hard to judge the conversation on a social media platform.

  2. Hey Bria, I agree that civil inattention is so easy to get involved in, mainly on social media application twitter. On twitter anyone can talk to anybody. If someone in having a conversation about Lebron James being the greatest player in North Carolina, and someone from California responds to them and says no it's Kobe Bryant then they are practicing civil inattention. Which is so easy to come by. Whenever people that don't know each other interact on social media that is an example of civil inattention.
