Groupie
So in this class I am currently taking, ESOC 211, we have been learning about group work and the different dynamics it may entail and/or require. There were a few things that made me think about not the groups we are put in, but as a class and university as a whole. As I was looking at the course material I was looking at the differences between planned groups, emergent groups, and circumstantial groups. Planned groups typically are what we have in this class. Each day we get together in groups that we form on our own because our professor requires us to. While we actually are all a part of an emergent group because we all go to this university and more specifically, we all take this class. By coming to this class every day we are a part of an emergent group because we are repeatedly interacting with the same subset of people. Then, by being in both of these groups we end up being in circumstantial groups, which is more of the specific groups that we are in. Every Tuesday and Thursday we are in circumstantial groups when we come to this class. We do not necessarily plan who we want in the group because we need to be with two people we have not been with prior. Also, the group is temporary for that class on that day because the next class we end up in another group although the group is still circumstantial. These concepts are very interesting and you do not realize what you are apart of until you are educated on it.

Hey Bria
ReplyDeleteYour blog post was interesting about groups when collaborating in society. I agree we belong to particular groups that you mentioned in your blog post that almost occur everyday. For instance, it could be a mixture of all different kinds of groups are happening all at once such as intimacy groups and emergent groups. We could belong to something much bigger as a whole; what you mentioned such as the University or outside groups which could be even more further then secondary and far beyond primary groups. I personally think that the group work that we do in class could be a mixture of planning groups and self-organization groups
Hey Bria, I agree that groups while in class all have different dynamics to it. It forces everyone that is in the group to think about the subject. The worst part about being in a group is that when one member isn’t being interactive while in a group while everyone is, the person can tend to get embarrassed/nervous because they are basically out of the loop of the class assignment. The rest of the group members then take note of who will help with the group assignment for the next time that they have to group up.
